Quilt plotting

So I'm planning the baby's quilt (because it's easier than cleaning the house?). I'm planning on using a natural unbleached cotton as the base colour and then random circles of bright coloured prints scattered on it. My theory is to have 15x15 inch squares, but to have each have a different sized circle placed in a different spot. Controlled chaos. Much like life (maybe calling life controlled is asking for it though).

Ignoring the fabrics, which are random and not necessarily what I have on hand, this is the idea. I'm going to use this tutorial for circle piecing: Easy Pieced Curves and I'm thinking I'll machine stitch in the ditch and hand quilt around the circles. Also I'm not going to bind it, as I'm lazy like that. I'm going to sew it up three sides inside out and flip it. Like I did with this one

Thoughts?

Also:
- I am on vacation for two weeks! Woot!
- I am freezing lots of fresh fruit this week.
- I need some new books to read.
- My car has signal lights again. Finally. Kind of takes the excitment out of driving though.
- I'm still sick sometimes. But not all the time. Everytime I say I'm past it I vomit or get a migraine or something. So clearly I should stop saying that.

Paper Mobile

First baby project completed! It's a photo mobile with strings of paper circles. I used magazine pages and natural wrapping paper. Cut with a scrapbooking circle cutter, threaded with needle and thread.

And as we have no nursery it currently resides in the living room...I kind of like it there. Shouldn't every room get some playfulness?

When I yawn it hurts my bellybutton

And other adventures in pregnancy....

- 12 weeks. My baby is the size of a plum apparently.
- Still puking. Not every day anymore. But I did today. Yaaaay.
- I am eating a lot of peanut butter. And Triskets. But not together.
- I am still crap and cooking...and cleaning...and drawing. That's partly from working full time evenings though. Can't blame the baby for everything.
- I think I will restart yoga this fall as I feel all out of alignment lately (by which I mean my back...not my energy...or chi...or whatever).
- I had a dream last night that I was keeping a baby goat and other farm animals in my closet. To be more sustainable.

Also, if you are someone who loves me and is going to buy the baby presents (such as my family members lurking around out there...I know you read this blog even if you neeeever comment) I've started a wish list to give you ideas of what we need: Sandvig Baby Wishlist
I will add to it as I think of things. Here's some general requests:
- Please nothing disposable. And nothing plastic unless it's on the list. Or electronic/battery operated. I want to keep those things to an abosolute minimun so I'm a bit picky about it.
- Yes to things like: wooden and cloth toys, nice organic things, handmade gifts.

Also I am on the lookout for used items in nice shape (but not right away as we have no room until we move) such as a light coloured crib (cream or light wood would be awesome) a decent stroller and a rocker or glider.

Hmmm...I do mean to blog more! I'll try and take photos of the awesome mobile I finally finished and post this weekend. Love you all!

In which we talk about midwives

Hello my friends, hopefully some of you are still hanging on out there. I'm starting to feel a bit better this past week or so...I still spend a lot of time looking like this however:

Mmmmm...sleeeeeep.

Anyway, it seems that when I tell people that I'm going with a midwife they really have no idea what that means...so I thought I'd give you guys the low down on what it means in Canada (or at least BC...I can't speak for the rest of the country.)

I am not having a home birth. This seems to be what everyone thinks of first when I say that I have a midwife instead of a doctor. Midwives here have full hospital priviledges. They can even give you the drugs if you need (I'm not planning on it...but it's nice to know). Unlike a doctor, they stay with you the whole time you're in active labour. They can do home births...but as I don't live in a town with a hospital they were pretty happy to have me come to the hospital. The doctors are there as a backup, but I won't even see them unless needed.

They have 4 years of University training specifically on prenatal care and childbirth. That makes it a no brainer to me. Find me a doctor with that much education on childbirth. Why would I go see someone who mainly deals with sick and injured people? There's nothing wrong with me.

I feel that the midwife experience is just more comfortable, they schedule me for 30-45 minute appointments so that they can make sure I have a chance to ask lots of questions (which I of course have...as I've never done this before) and they make sure that I understand any test results and just that I'm doing well. I really feel well taken care of.

I should also mention that I am lucky enough to live in a place where I don't have to pay for this. It's all covered under my BC medical (to which Craig says "finally, we're actually using it!"). Some places in Canada still don't count midwives under their medical plan (hooray for Alberta for just changing that!). So really? It's win win.

Maybe that was boring...but I just felt the need to explain it all. Just because I'm having a midwife doesn't mean that the baby will be born in my bed with some hippie incense burning in the background. Just so you know.

Also, look: I am starting to look pregnant...and not just like I can't lay off the doughnuts!
