Influence Map

This is a fun meme I did on deviantart last night. The idea is to show all the different things that influence your art. I of course have more than could fit. If you want to have a closer look and read my explanation, check it out here: Hanna's Influence Map. Artists, what influences you?

Christmas Meme
Because I feel like sitting for a bit, and I know you all care. From Karen's Blog. Let me know if you do it!
1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? If you ask this question you have clearly never received a gift from me. It's not just wrapping paper, it's an art form. There is a theme. The only time I give gift bags is if I've made them myself.
2. Real tree or Artificial? Real. You can go back and forth about the eco-friendlyness of it all but I think plastic is just not as nice. Also then you have to store it. And it doesn't smell nice.
3. When do you put up the tree? Um this weekend? After I finish hanging artwork and curtains? (yay! I finished painting the trim today!)
4. When do you take the tree down? When it dies. One year we had a tree in this little not very warm cabin my husband was living in. The tree lived till mid February. That's not normal.
5. Do you like eggnog? Yes. Especially in eggnog french toast.
6. Favorite gift received as a child? mmmm...probably the dollhouse my parents and grandparents made me.
7. Hardest person to buy for? People who say they don't want a present. Don't be difficult! You're getting one, so you might as well tell me what you want! Seriously.
8. Easiest person to buy for? Barb or Jen. As I just buy them things I like.
9. Do you have a nativity scene? Nope, maybe next year I will make one...
10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Are those the only two options? Does saying Merry Christmas on my blog count?
11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Can't answer that, everyone who buys me things reads my blog :P
12. Favorite Christmas Movie? Charlie Brown...or maybe the Grinch. I like it old school.
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? Sometime in November when I suddenly realize that I should be more organized. Sometimes I realize this in mid December.
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? I don't regive, unless it happens to be to the thrift store.
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Shortbread. And everything else. Christmas is much much more about food then presents (I mean, after Jesus...and family...but then food)
16. Lights on the tree? White please.
17. Favorite Christmas song? I favour the melancholy minor key carols...although I think God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is the most fun to sing.
18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Depends on how far away my family is, because that's where I'll be!
19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer's? Dasher Dancer Prancer Vixen Comet Cupid and something and Blitzen...I guess that's a no.
20. Angel on the tree top or a star? Star
21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Stockings and immediate family in the morning, other stuff...other times.
22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? People who refer to it as "The Season". It's so irritatingly vague. If you celebrate a different winter holiday you can wish me a Happy Holidays...or a Happy Hanukkah or Happy Solstice or whatever. But please to don't talk about The Season. Are you wishing me greetings for Winter? The ski season? Sometimes I like to wish people Season's Greetings in Summer, just to throw them off. Because who doesn't want a nice Summer season? Come to think of it, you aren't even wishing them anything, just greeting them. So really, you could just say "hi, it's Winter" and it would be the same thing.
23. Favorite ornament, theme, or color? I like natural woodsy things and little whimsical feather birds. Unfortunately I don't seem to have any (well I have...two birds) thus I hate all my decorations at the moment.
24. Favorite for Christmas Dinner? Gravy? I just love it aaaall.
25. What do you want for Christmas this year? To not throw up Christmas Dinner. That would be great.

This game is useless. And not even that interesting. But still I have been fighting for four days. And mostly losing lately.
But at least I'm cute.

Magazine search = despair!

I can't find the magazine with my illustration in it anywhere in my area. We don't have any shops big enough to carry a good variety. Would someone be able to track down a couple copies and mail them to me? I can make it worth your while!
It's the February issue of Romantic Homes.
*Edit* Thanks so much to Fiorinda for tracking it down for me :) She scanned the page to show me so I'll share:

Someday this will all be old hat I hope...but that day is not today :P

7 Christmas Facts
Well, I was tagged by Amber to tell you 7 facts about myself. I think I've done that a couple times before. So I will try to come up with 7 Christmas related facts about myself, to mix things up a little.
1) When I was 9(?) I managed to get mauled by a cat right before family photos. I had nasty scratches down one side of my face. Thus there are photos of me and my brother in front of the tree with me always looking sort of to the side...very subtle.
2) I love Christmas cookies (big surprise I know) and my favourite is shortbread. I make standard shortbread and cinnamon shortbread. Sooo yummy. Real butter of course.
3) My parent's cat (who was once my cat, you know, when I lived at home), George, is a tree attacking machine. All the lower ornaments have to be fabric, and we always find them around on the floor. My parents wire the tree to the ceiling as he has pulled down more than one tree in his time. We keep thinking he'll outgrow this, but at 13(?) it seems unlikely.
4) I collect gold star ornaments. Possibly a hangover from when I was a teenager and "Gold star for effort!" was one of my favourite sayings. Possibly not.
5) One year I went carolling wearing the tree skirt as a...skirt. Oh yes, I was 17.
6) My favourite Christmas Carols are "Carol of the Bells" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" Something about minor keys.
7) Speaking of which, at my family Christmas Eve party (which is almost never on Christmas Eve) we each pick a carol and how many verses. I always choose to sing all the verses to my carol. Partly because I really like to sing "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" but mostly because it always drove Barb crazy as she wanted to cut the singing short and get to the presents. I still do this. It still makes her crazy.
I tag....oh just do it and leave me a comment. It is for the fun!

Book Meme
Blame my mom for tagging me. These are seven random book related facts about me.
1. I read really fast. About 3 novels a week on average (I can read one a day easy if I let myself). Once in college they gave us speed reading tips, for studying purposes...and I realized that that's how I read all the time. This also means that I have a huge vocabulary and crap spelling.
2. Pride and Prejudice is my favourite book that I've never read. I love all three movie versions...as well as anything else loosely based on it. That's actually really embarrassing, I need to read that book.
3. When I was a kid, I wasn't allowed to read most of my parents sci-fi/fantasy books (for good reason :P) but the covers were soooo pretty. So when they left them in the bathroom I would read them and put them back exactly as I found them. Ha, betcha you two didn't know that!
4. I own 38 books by Anne McCaffrey. Hrm, that's kinda a lot considering it's been a while since I read them. But you just don't sell your friends.
5. My scary tolerance is higher for books than it is for movies. Much higher as my movie tolerance is that I'm a big pansy.
6. My mom read my brother and I "Strange Companions" when we were kids and I was sooo upset when Archie died (sorry for the spoiler :P) that I wouldn't let her continue for a long time. He was trampled by a moose. I'm still kinda scared of mooses. Well not that scared apparently.
7. My favourite book covers of all time are:
Kushiels Chosen (cover by John Jude Palencar...I love him)

Od Magic (cover by kinuko craft...who I also love)

Iron Kissed (cover By Daniel Dos Santos, okay so I love them all)

The Black Unicorn (cover by Heather Cooper...who I don't acually know anything about...but let's assume I'd love her)

Say no to cheap photo manip covers people! More paintings!
And for extra fun...this is one of my least favourite covers eeeever. Who thought these were a good idea? Who!

Well that might have been a bit much for number 7.
I tag:
1. Kait
2. Karen (ha! you've been double tagged, now you have to do it)
3. Nicole
4. And Nicole
5. Mirtika
6. Jen (post it on facebook if you must)
7. Kari (ditto)

Search Engines
I like to read my search engine hits in Google Analytics. Some of them make sense:
Hanna Sandvig
Hanna's Life is Cool
Hanna art
etc.
Some of them I can see where they came from:
Hedgehog pincushion
Ocean Necklace
Brick Quilt Pattern
Organic Gardening
Good good, but can someone explain these? Here's my top ten strange google hits:
10)"happy hanna" cartoon
9) cool eek ....who searches for this? why?
8)pictures of headache have I drawn a picture of a headache? Hmmm?
7)sepia lepus what?
6)you and coold
5) "gudrun lilja gunnlaugsdottir" explain this to me!
4)"life is cool" "shoes" okay I can understand this one, still funny that someone searched this way though
3)hacking cough 5 year old I posted once about having a hacking cough....ooops twice now! and I get lots of hits about it. Tragic as I can't help the hacking ones at all.
2)incompitence...ahahaha!
1)Finally I also get about 10 hits a month regarding the Gazoo, a petting zoo in Three Hills that I don't even remember writing about. It's good times though, you should go.
Okay those weren't really in any order.
What about you guys? Did you find me while looking for a picture of a headache? What's your strangest google hit?

April Giveaway!
So I'm working on some projects for my Etsy shop and I thought it would be fun to do a little monthly giveaway. This month I've got a collection of magnets with my art on them and a handmade bookmark done with some ribbon, felt and quilting scraps.

Here's what you need to do to enter, just post in the comments before 11:59pm pacific time Wednesday Night (April 2) telling me what your favourite colour or combination of colours are at the moment.
This is open to anyone, no matter what country you live in and my comments are set so that anyone can post, just make sure you leave your name if you aren't signed in!

Me again.
Just thought I should take a minute to plug a couple artists I've recently bought things from...(psst, artist nuddyness warning in the galleries...nothing untasteful though)
Shatia Hamilton (aka Nashya), did this beautiful bust of my character Hanasu for me. Yes yes she looks vaguely creepy...but she does in my pictures too so what can you do? This is my first bought with money commission and I couldn't be happier with it.

Also, I needed a mouse pad. See, I don't use my mouse that much, but I do need it for my second monitor. My tablet only reads the main monitor to keep the proportions right, otherwise I can't draw very well. So I just had the mouse up on the desk but then when I was de-glooming my computer corner (note to self, make de-glooming post) I covered the desk with a pretty scarf from my sister in law. Yeah the mouse doesn't roll on that. And I don't like most standard mouse pads...they're all bubbles and kittens and whatnot (I should mention that Craig's mouse pad is the map for World of Warcraft. Naturally). So I went on deviantart and found that one of my favourite paintings is printed as a mouse pad. So I ordered "Wrath" by Marta Dahlig (aka Blackeri). And it came in the mail today! Hooray! My mouse rejoiceth!
It's a cropped version of this:

If that doesn't inspire me, I don't know what will!
